βCanβt we just add side protection to my normal glasses?β
π₯½ Prescription Safety Eyewear Is More Than Putting Side Shield Into Ordinary Pair of Glasses
“Can’t we just add side protection to my normal glasses?”
I often hear people ask this when discussing prescription safety eyewear.
At first, it sounds like a simple solution — take a pair of normal prescription glasses and add side shields.
But side protection alone does not automatically turn ordinary prescription glasses into safety eyewear.
When selecting prescription safety eyewear, we need to look at the complete eyewear system, including:
π‘οΈ Frame & protective design
The frame should be designed for the intended protective application, not simply for everyday optical use.
ποΈ Side and overall coverage
Side protection is important, but the design, coverage and fit also need to be considered for the workplace application.
π Prescription lenses
The prescription lens needs to be correctly made and appropriately selected for the intended use.
π§ Lens mounting & edging
Safety frames can have specific requirements for how prescription lenses are edged and fitted.
π Applicable safety requirements
Most importantly, the complete eyewear should be evaluated against the relevant safety requirements for its intended application.
So, adding a side shield to ordinary glasses may provide some additional coverage — but it should not automatically be considered equivalent to purpose-designed prescription safety eyewear.
After 27 years in this industry, this is one of the areas where I believe optical knowledge and occupational safety need to work together.
The goal isn't simply to add protection.
The goal is to provide clear vision and appropriate protection in the workplace.
Clear vision. Safer people. Stronger workplaces.
